How to check if a Cisco product is end of life

Quick answer

There are three routes, and which one you want depends on what you are starting from. If you know the product ID, read the official EoX bulletin. If you have physical hardware and no model string, start with a serial number lookup. If you have a whole fleet, use the EoX API. In every case, the date to write down is the Last Date of Support.

Method 1: the official EoX bulletin (most authoritative)

Cisco publishes an end-of-life bulletin per product, indexed from its end-of-life policy and notices pages. The bulletin gives you the full milestone set for that product: the End-of-Life Announcement, End of Sale, End of Software Maintenance, and the Last Date of Support.

This is the source of truth. If a third-party checker and a Cisco bulletin disagree, the bulletin wins.

Method 2: serial number lookup (for kit already in the rack)

Often you are standing in front of a switch with a label and no idea of the exact product ID. Cisco's device and serial number checking tools resolve a serial to its product ID, and from that product page you can reach the end-of-sale and end-of-life information for that specific model.

This is the fastest route for an audit of equipment you inherited, and it has the advantage of telling you exactly what you have rather than what you think you have. Third-party lookup services exist too and can be convenient, but treat their dates as a pointer and confirm anything important against Cisco's own bulletin.

Method 3: the EoX API (for whole fleets)

Cisco offers an EoX Support API that returns end-of-life records by serial number or product ID, which is the sane approach once you are dealing with dozens or hundreds of devices rather than one. It requires a Cisco developer account, access to the API, and generated client credentials, so it is a setup task rather than something you do in a browser tab. There are also open-source query tools built on top of it if you would rather not write the integration yourself.

What to write down once you have found it

Whichever method you use, capture three things per device: the product ID, the Last Date of Support, and where the device physically is. End of Sale is worth noting but it is not your deadline. LDoS is the day support genuinely stops, and it typically lands about five years after End of Sale, which is explained in full in what Cisco LDoS actually means.

The limit of checking

A check tells you the status today. It tells you nothing next quarter, when a device you cleared has moved a year closer to its LDoS and nobody re-ran the lookup. This is the honest weakness of every checker tool, including Cisco's own: they answer "is this product end of life?" and never "which of my devices expires next?". That gap is the whole argument for recording the dates instead of re-checking them, and it is why lookup databases and trackers solve different problems.
