NETGEAR end-of-life: why “lifetime warranty” doesn't mean lifetime safe

By Nico De Muynck · Updated July 19, 2026

Quick answer

NETGEAR's lifecycle turns on a single date: the End of Service (EoS) date on its business EOL list, after which a product stops getting security updates. The generous ProSAFE warranties confuse people. A switch can be under a lifetime hardware warranty yet be past End of Service and quietly unsupported. Warranty and security are two different clocks.

The date that actually matters: End of Service

NETGEAR maintains a business products End-of-Life list with an End of Service date per model. That date is the meaningful one: NETGEAR states plainly that continuing to use a product past EoS means accepting the risk of unsupported hardware: no more security updates, greater exposure to vulnerabilities and cyberattacks. For a network switch or access point sitting on your LAN, that's a real and growing risk, not a formality.

The warranty trap

Here's where NETGEAR trips people up. End of Service dates don't change the warranty period: they're deliberately separate. And the warranties are long:

  • Fully Managed Switches: warranted for their lifetime, as long as the original owner keeps using them.
  • Other ProSAFE Limited Lifetime Warranty products: hardware warranty and 24/7 chat support run until five years after the product's EOL date.

The trap: a “lifetime warranty” tells you NETGEAR will replace a failed unit. It says nothing about security updates, which stop at End of Service. Teams see “lifetime” and assume the device is fine to run indefinitely. It isn't. (This is the EOL-vs-support distinction in its most expensive form.)

How to find your dates

1. The NETGEAR End of Service page. NETGEAR lists End of Service status and its business-products EOL list at netgear.com/about/eos.

2. Track EoS, not warranty. Record the End of Service date for each device, that's your security deadline. The warranty date is a separate, secondary field.

3. Treat past-EoS gear as a replacement priority, lifetime warranty or not, because it can no longer be secured.

Lifetime warranty ≠ lifetime secure. Track the EoS date.

Record your NETGEAR End of Service dates in EOL Tracking and get warned before the security updates stop.
